HUMANOID ROBOTS
the 30-second data
The earliest humanoids were built as early as the thirteenth century by Al-Jazari. In the fifteenth century, Italian scientist Leonardo da Vinci also designed a humanoid automaton. In Japan, mechanical dolls called Karakuri puppets were manufactured in the eighteenth century. However, these cannot be considered robots, because they lack the sensory system that is crucial for any mechanical system to be considered a robot. The first humanoid robot was called WABOT, and was developed by Ichiro Kato at Waseda University, Japan in 1970–73. One of the best-known humanoids, Honda’s Asimo, was the product of a project that started in 1986. Honda robots were a leap forward in humanoid research due to their sturdiness, lightness and strength. Hiroshi Ishiguro from Osaka University is famous for his Geminoid series, which are very realistic androids. These robots are capable of human-like movements and gestures, even though their actions are controlled by remote human operators. When talking about humanoids, we immediately think of two-legged robots, and it is true that research on humanoid robotics is mostly focused on legged locomotion. However, robots consisting of only human-like upper bodies are also considered humanoids as their structure mimics the human form.
